Although the popularity of gel pens in general has drastically increased recently, the popularity of Muji pens in particular has increased more than most of their competition. This has resulted in more and more people reaching out with a range of questions about Muji pens and although we have already answered some in our article on if Muji pens are good or not, we constantly see new questions popping up.

One of the new questions that we have noticed people are asking more and more is based around are Muji pens waterproof or not? As more and more people have been reaching out and asking this we have decided to publish this article dedicated to the question as well as some variants of it that we have seen people asking.

Our hope is that we will be able to help any of our readers who are looking for a waterproof gel pen and although we already have an article online about what makes gel pens waterproof and what you should be looking for in your gel pen, we feel the number of people specifically asking for Muji pens warrants a dedicated article.

Are Muji Pens Waterproof?

Although the Muji gel pens offer a super-smooth writing experience with a solid line width that is almost always free from skipping, the gel ink that they use in their pens is not waterproof. Thankfully, there are a number of high-quality waterproof gel pens on the market that you are able to use with your watercolors and other water-based work where you need a waterproof gel pen.

One of the main drawbacks of the Muji gel pen range is that the pigment used in the ink really does not hold up well to pressure being applied to it after the initial application to the paper and it can smudge and smear relatively easily when compared to some other pens. The pigment also has issues with water after application too resulting in feathering, bleeding, and ghosting as well as the usual issues with non-waterproof gel pens.

Are Muji Pens Water Resistant?

Depending on your needs you may not need a fully waterproof pen and a water-resistant pen may be able to get the job done. Unfortunately, the Muji gel pen range are not water-resistant either unlike some of the compeating pens on the market. You are able to write with your Muji pen, leave it for days to dry and even a small amount of water will end up causing the ink to run.

A Suitable Waterproof Alternative

Thankfully, as we touched on above, there are a wide range of high-quality waterproof gel pens available with a breakdown of some of them in the video above. If you are set on using gel pens with your work and they have to be waterproof then we would recommend that you go with an alternative to Muji.

Please note though, even the competing gel pens that are waterproof usually need time to dry and for the pigment to actually set into the paper before their waterproof properties can take hold. For example, if you are out in the rain working with a waterproof gel pen, the raindrops can easily cause the water-based gel ink to run due to the pigment in the ink not having a chance to set into the paper first.

Conclusion

That brings our article going over if Muji pens are waterproof to a close. We know that it was short and sweet compared to our other articles but it is a very simple topic to cover. We hope that you have found it helpful and that you have found value in the article but if you do need gel pens that are waterproof then Muji are not the brand for you.
